DIAGNOSIS OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

Multiple sclerosis has many symptoms similar to other diseases, which is why the diagnosis can be time-consuming and usually accomplished by a combination of the identification of the symptoms and the evolution that the patient presents with the clinical examination and complementary diagnostic.

The criteria that help to diagnose multiple sclerosis are:

  • Symptoms and signs that may indicate a brain disorder or spinal cord
  • Evidence of two or more lesions on a magnetic resonance examination
  • Two or more episodes with symptoms that last at least a day and with a month’s interval
  • The absence of other explanations for the symptoms presented by the patient

In addition to the analysis of the symptoms and their evolution, there are medical tests that can be performed to confirm the diagnosis:

  • Nuclear magnetic resonance
  • Lumbar puncture
  • The study of evoked potentials
  • Blood tests.
